Abstract/Contents:"Modeling the fate of pesticides applied to turf requires the use of foliar washoff coefficients to estimate soil pesticide loading. The purpose of this study was to determine functional relationships between rainfall intensities and amounts, and the washoff of chlorothalonil (TCIN) from turf foliage. A flowable formulation of TCIN was applied to field plots of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and the turf subjected to 3 to 57 mm of simulated rainfall 18 to 30 h later. Rainfall amounts were applied at average intensities of 18.6 or 39.9 mm h-1 using an oscillating nozzle rainfall simulator. Foliage samples were collected by scalping the TCIN-sprayed areas before and after simulated rainfall. The fraction of TCIN washoff was determined by dividing individual plot 'after' washoff TCIN amounts by the matching plot 'before' washoff TCIN amount. Washoff of TCIN was independent of rainfall intensity, and was best described using the equation, y = 1.00 - 0.06/x, where y represents the fraction of TCIN remaining on turf foliage and x, the amount of rainfall in millimeters. Data indicated that 40% of flowable formulated TCIN was removed from turf foliage when 44 mm of precipitation occurred within 30 h of application."
