Abstract/Contents:"Mixtures of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) and Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) have become increasingly popular, particularly among sod growers, but little research has been done on fescue/bluegrass mixtures using modern cultivars. Contemporary fescue cultivars exhibit improved density, color, low growth habit, and aggressiveness over the open, common-type varieties upon which many prior studies were based. This study examined the interaction of seeding rate, fescue seed ratio, and fescue and bluegrass cultivar on stand establishment charactersitics. A factorial-design, field experiment was establisheed via sod-seeding into a glyphosate-killed bluegrass turf. Results indicated that the bluegrass monoculture (cv. 'NuStar') had the darkest genetic color, finest leaf texture, and greatest turf density, whicle fescue/bluegrass mixtures containing 'Pixie', and improved fescue cultivar, were statistically equivalent in those variables. 'Arid', an intermediate fescue cultivar, showed greater competition with the bluegrass that the other two fescues, and subsequently had fewer bluegrass shoots in the mixed stand. The tendency for species segregation was greater with the common-type fescue cultivar than the improved types. Lower fescue percentages (even down to 50 to 75% fescue) do not seem to cause segregation problems in the newer cultivars. In summary, the four management factors in this study had a profound effect on stand establishment characteristics, accounting for a 5x difference in total shoot count."
