Abstract/Contents:"Internships are an integral part of the educational process for students involved in agricultural sciences, particularly turfgrass science, due to the large number of opportunities in the turfgrass industry. Surveys provide one method of analysis of student learning while conducting internships. The objectives of this study were to determine the utility of surveys to gather background information for future students, assess student learning opportunities, and evaluate the effectiveness of student prepared objective lists while on internship. Surveys were sent in 1990 and 1991 to 36 students (72 total surveys) and their supervisors (golf course superintendent) participating in the mandatory internship of the Golf Turfgrass Management program in the Institute of Agricultural Technology at Michigan State University. The survey return rates were 78% in 1990 and 77% in 1991. Background information regarding the golf course, housing situation, and wages was gathered through the surveys. This is useful in answering questions by future students and/or parents. The surveys were useful in tracking program implementation such as the licensing of students to apply pesticides (10% licensed in 1990 vs 65% in 1991). Prior to the 1991 internship period, students were required to submit an objective list to their supervisor. Learning opportunities were more recognizable by the majority of students who had prepared objective lists. Students and supervisors were in general agreement that contact hours between them were either very low (<5 h/mo) or high (>15 h/mo) and was dependent on the month of the internship. Final analysis by the students showed that >80% would recommend their intership site to future students. The preparation of an objective list prior to an internship is now a requirement of the Golf Turfgrass Management Program at Michigan State University."
