Abstract/Contents:"Twenty-one cool season grasses were overseeded into a Tifgreen bermudagrass putting green on January 4, 1973. Three levels of simulated golf traffic were imposed on the grasses to evaluate establishment and performance under simulated traffic for an 8-week period starting the day after seeding. The study was terminated after 8 weeks due to excessive competition from the bermudagrass. In general those grasses that were most tolerant to traffic were those which had fast germinaiton and establishment rates. The ryegrasses as a group were superior to the bentgrasses, bluegrasses and fescues. As expected, many of the grasses performed well without simulated traffic, but major differences were effected under both traffic levels. Manhattan ryegrass was superior to all other grasses under trial during the first 4 weeks of the test but was no better than most of the ryegrasses after 8 weeks of daily traffic. A Tifgreen bermudagrass check plot which was not overseeded performed suprisingly well in this test, which leads one to question the need for overseeding in South Florida. This report summarizes the results from a 1972-1973 winter overseeding trial that was conducted at the Agricultural Research Center in Fort Lauderdale. The purpose was to evaluate the effects of simulated golf traffic on the establishment and persistence of several cool season turfgrasses when used for overseeding dormant bermudagrass putting greens."
