Abstract/Contents:"Many agronomists and turf managers consider that a primary aim of good turf management is to eliminate Poa annua from the sward. Whilst certain cultural turf maintenance operations may reduce P. annua populations, this weed grass species almost invariably invades most types of turfgrass worldwide. This observation over the last 50-60 years has led to the chemical control of P. annua being investigated. In this review, 56 different pesticides which have been evaluated for selective control of P. annua were identified. In many studies it has proved relatively easy to find a chemical which will control P. annua, but many effective treatments have also caused phytotoxicity to the desirable turfgrasses in the sward. It is this problem of selectivity, i.e. finding a treatment which will control P. annua but will leave the desirable grasses unharmed, which is the major obstacle to finding an effective chemical control method for P. annua. For certain turfgrass situations there are currently both effective and selective (but not necessarily approved) treatments for P. annua. In the UK these include the use of ethofumesate for control of P. annua in Lolium perenne swards and methabenzthiazuron for control of P. annua in Festuca swards. Also, plant breeding for resistance to the total herbicide amitrole has led to the development of Agrostis/Festuca turf which may be treated with this herbicide to selectively control P. annua. In the USA, pre-emergence applications of bensulide are reported as successful and widely used for control of P. annua, although recent studies have identified certain phytotoxic effects on Agrostis spp. Also, in recent studies, linuron has been shown to selectively remove P. annua from a P. pratensis sward. The most widely recommmended chemical programmes for selective control of P. annua are published in Australia where several herbicides according to the type of turf are suggested. However, whilst these recommendations may be appropriate and effective under Australian conditions, many of the herbicide/turfgrass combinations have not been found to be suitable in studies in other countries. In recent years turfgrass growth retardants such as paclobutrazol, fenarimol and flurprimidol have shown some selective control of P. annua in Agrostis swards and the use of flurprimidol and paclobutrazol for conversion of Agrostis/P. annua stands to predominently Agrostis has been widely evaluated in the USA."
