Abstract/Contents:"Changes taking place over a three year period in the botanical composition of a mixed sward of Festuca rubra L. ssp. commutata (Gaud.), Agrostis castellana (Boiss. & Reut.) and A. capillaris (L.) maintained as fine turf grown on three types of golf green construction (sand, United States Golf Association (USGA) specification and sandy-loam topsoil) were examined. Experimental treatments applied during this period were three rates of irrigation, five of nitrogen and two of phosphate fertiliser. Effects on botanical composition were examined alongside measurements of rootzone pH, phosphate potassium, calcium and organic matter content. Plant death and reduced vigour were associated with both high and low rates of nitrogen fertiliser, low rates of irrigation and were especially apparent on the sand constructions not receiving phosphate fertiliser. Ingress of the weed species Poa annua (L.) occurred mainly on the soil constructions and its rate of ingress was enhanced greatly by increased nitrogen input. No single soil chemical feature was ascribed to any particular botanical outcome, although most of those measured responded to the treatments applied. The influences of rootzone texture and organic matter on the availability of nutrients were proposed as major factors affecting the efficacy of fertiliser applications to fine turf."
