| Abstract/Contents: | "There are several fescue species and sub-species with fine leaves which are adapted to poor soil conditions, drought and shade. The quantity of cultivars of such species has not been evaluated in Japan. Therefore, this experiment was conducted to select cultivars of fine-leaved fescues for use as low maintenance turf at 5 locations in Japan. The results of our evaluation showed that only a few cultivars of these species could be used in Kokura, Kyoto, Nakayama, or Fukushima whereas most of the cultivars were adapted to the Hakodate area. Cultivars of Chewings fescue showed better performance than others. It is suggested that cultivars of such species could be used for winter overseeding of Japanese lawngrass, except in the northern area where they could be used throughout the year." |
