Abstract/Contents:The public perceives pesticides as being dangerous chemicals that harm wildlife and humans. Actually there are many regulations on pesticide use that are imposed on the golf course and grounds maintenance industry by both federal and state government. "The Federal law that covers pesticide application is the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide & Rodenticide Act (FIFRA)." The following are results of a study conducted on pesticides: 1) None of the currently registered pesticides detected were at toxicologically significant concentrations. 2) Seven of the tested turf pesticides were never detected. 3) Lower nitrate concentrations resulted less nitrogen, slow-release nitrogen, or both were used. Out of a list of 30 risks to human health and mortality, pesticides rank number 28.
