| Abstract/Contents: | "This paper outlines results obtained from assessments of Marasmius oreades fairy rings, which indicate that this fungus is capable of conferring a state of water-repellence to the soil through which it has passed. Soil sampled from the inner zone of M. oreades rings demonstrated a higher degree of water-repellence compared with soil sampled from the outer zone through which the fungal mycelium has not passed. Scanning electron microscopy has confirmed the presence of active fungal mycelium only within the so-called dead zone of the ring. This supports the conclusion that it is not the presence of the fungal mycelium itself which is causing the development of the water-repellence, but deposition of some metabolic or decay product originating from the fungus." |
