Abstract/Contents:"The high incidence of severe knee injuries occurring in American football consitutes a national health problem of considerable magnitude". Highlights the results of an extensive study that was well controlled in order to determine if the shoe type and cleat length would have an effect on the incidence and severity of knee and ankle injuries. Inclusive in the study were a variety of surfaces including: natural grass, two inch blade length; natural grass,wet; dirt (baseball infield); Astroturf, nylon, 500 denier, 1/2 inch length; Astroturf, wet; Tartan Turf, nylon, 60 denier, 1/2 inch length; Tartan Turf, wet; Poly-Turf, nylon, 250 denier, 1/2 inch length; Poly-Turf, wet.
