Abstract/Contents:"The growth responses and calcium uptake by Agrostis canina, A. setacea, A. stolonifera and A. tenuis are reported. In an experiment using a podsolic soil (pH 4.1) as growth medium, the addition of calcium sulphate and calcium carbonate resulted in marked improvements in the growth of A. canina, A. stolonifera and A. tenuis. In these instances increase in dry weight was accompanied by increased calcium in the shoots. No growth response and no increase in the calcium in the shoots was found in A. setacea. Water culture experiments showed that with A. setacea and A. tenuis the calcium concentration in the shoots reached a steady state in conditions where the growth response to calcium in the external solution was maximal. It is suggested that calcium uptake is linked with metabolism and that in A. setacea the active transport system becomes saturated at low concentrations of calcium in the external medium."
