Abstract/Contents:"In order to work out a nitrogen balance, assessments were made of N accumulation in the biomass of clippings, above-ground sward material and roots (0 to 15cm), and compared with loss of N by leaching. Comparing the two rootzone mixtures, the N content of the clippings was greater on the soil-less rootzone, but among the constructions it was greater on those with soil in the profile. This reinforced, in respect of N removal, the trend already apparent in biomass formation. With above-ground sward material and roots there was less difference among the treatments. The N utilization in the total biomass ranged from 57% to 80%. Of the two rootzone mixtures, it was higher in the soil-less one. Among the three constructions, it increased with increasing proportion of soil: this was the result of the release of N in the construction with soil, adding to the input of N from fertilizer, irrigation water and the atmosphere. The N loss by leaching, at 2,0 to 2,9%, was relatively slight; it was broadly the same as in earlier results. In water use, there were hardly any differences when it was calculated according to surface area. But calculation based on dry matter production of clippings shows a better water utilization on the soil-less rootzone and on the construction which included soil."
