Abstract/Contents:"Research was undertaken to see whether organic nutrient materials which could be easily broken down could be used for topdressing golf greens so as to limit the build-up of thatch or increase its breakdown. For the control treatment a nutrient topdressing was made up with sulphate of ammonia and sand. The organic nutrient materials, also made up with sand, were Bactosol, Biosol and sewage sludge. The trial was carried out on a specially constructed trial area with a thin toplayer (7 cm) of clean bunker sand of particle size grade 0/1. The N applied in the nutrient topdressing during the course of the trial, from spring 1986 to autumn 1989, was 45-50% of the total N, and somewhat higher for the control than for the other treatments. During the course of the trial, the organic nutrient materials gave poorer sward colour and less growth than the control, but the snow mould damage was initially more severe. At the end of the trial, the plots with the organic nutrient materials applied in nutrient topdressing, although they had a greater quantity of material applied to them, showed a thinner topdressing layer, with clearly less organic matter in it. In conclusion, the question is discussed whether the difference between the sulphate of ammonia and the organic N sources were due to better N utilization or to thatch breakdown already beginning."
