| Abstract/Contents: | "Nutrient enrichment of drainage waters is increasingly causing severe environmental degradation on the Swan Coastal Plain and in other coastal areas of south-western Australia. This enrichment is largely caused by fertilizer phosphorus and nitrogen which is applied to sandy soils and being leached beyond the root zone of plants into drainage water. Many lakes and estuaries of the coastal area have high nutrient levels, and severe algal growth problems. Ground water resources may also be at risk due to high nutrient levels. All users of the coastal plain areas need to be aware of these problems, and policies and strategies developed to combat them." |
