Abstract/Contents: | "Couch grass swards in W.A. decline in growth and appearance as the temperature falls in May and June each year. There is a separate long term decline in vigour and cover as couch is invaded by Winter grass (Poa annua) in the winter and Crab grass (Digitaria sanguinalis) in the spring. In many cases, a black layer of up to 15cm thickness of partly decomposed organic material develops above the soil base. Measures adopted to prevent the decline include: [1] The use of recently selected superior strains which retain leaf colour and grow well into winter. [2] Suitable managerial practices including herbicide application to limit weed invasion. [3] Renovation to reduce thatch development. [4] Removal of grass cuttings. The effectiveness of using superior strains of couch such as National Park, Winter green and Greenlees Park is now illustrated in their performance in bowling greens, golf courses, sports ovals and tennis courts and by comparisons with common couch in trials in which new strains are grown under identical soil, climate and management conditions in replicated plots. In bio-assays, measurements of root lengths have shown reduced growth in sterilised soil samples from some sites when compared with that in clean sand controls indicating a possible role of chemical inhibitors in the soil in the long term decline of couch." |
