| Abstract/Contents: | Four turf mixtures were sown in 1967 and given a standard NPK fertilizer treatment for 2 years. In 1969 and 1970 additional N was applied at 10, 20 or 30 g/m2. In 1969 the total growth, the number of mowings and the weight of the mowings increased with additional N, particularly at the 20-g rate, 30 g having no further effect. These responses were less marked in 1970. The effectiveness of the treatments varied with the species composition of the mixtures, and the proportions of various grasses in the turf changed under the different N treatments. Data are presented on the foliar N, P2O5 and K2O contents of the mowings. The K2O content was comparatively high, due to the physiological juvenility of the material, but when N was applied at > 10 g/m2 much more potash was removed in the mowings than was added in the fertilizer program. The average N:P2O5:K2O ratio was 1:0.3-0.4:8-1, indicating a larger potash requirement than expected. |
