Abstract/Contents:"Mon 12000 is a new sulfonyl urea herbicide currently being developed by Monsanto Company for weed control in turf. Postemergence activity of MON 12000 was evaluated for yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) control in cool season turf. Rainfastness, effect of surfactant, effect of mowing, and water volume (GPA) of application were also evaluated. MON 12051 was the formulation used in these studies. Trials were conducted in 1988-1992. In 1992, 13 replicated small plot trials were conducted in Indiana, Missouri, and New Jersey. Treatments were made to 3-9 leaf stage (up to 6 inches tall) yellow nutsedge. MON 12051 provided excellent postemergence control of yellow nutsedge at 0.06-0.125 lb ai/A. At lower rates, sequential applications were needed after 5-8 weeks after treatment to obtain full season yellow nutsedge control. Simulated rainfall 3 hours after treatment did not affect the activity of MON 12051 starting at 0.03 lb ai/A. Addition of different surfactants has no impact on yellow nutsedge control. Mowing immediately before and two days or more after MON 12051 treatment did not reduce yellow nutsedge control. Applications at 20-240 GPA did not affect efficacy. MON 12051 was safe to bentgrass, bermudagrass, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, and zoysiagrass."
