Abstract/Contents: | "This was the eighth and final year of data from this trial established in the fall of 1982. It was established in conjunction with several identical trials across the country coordinated by the USDA. The purpose of the trial was to identify regional adaptation of 48 perennial ryegrass cultivars. Cultivars were evaluated for turf quality each month of the growing season through August when the study was terminated. The trial was maintained at a 2 in mowing height with 3 to 4 lb N/1000 ft2 through the growing season and irrigated when needed to prevent drought. Preemergence herbicide is applied once in the spring and broadleaf herbicide was applied once in September to control weeds. This trial received record rainfall during the 1990 season. There were no statistical differences among the first 16 cultivars in Table 3. Notice that several of the top performers in 1990 were experimental numbered cultivars. Several of these numbered cultivars have rated in the top 20 each of the past few years. A considerable amount of breeding and selection of perennial ryegrasses has been conducted in the past decade and a number of new releases of well-adapted cultivars can be expected in the future. Some of these numbered cultivars have been given names. It is interesting to note that 'Manhattan II' and 'Manhattan', cultivars that performed well in this trial in past years, received low ratings in 1990. This was likely due to the very wet conditions." |
