Abstract/Contents: | Sports turf for winter use requires a permeable soil surface layer with an adequate moisture-holding capacity. Under experimental conditions a surface layer of "LANGVAD- mixture", consisting of 60% sand and 40% peat, produced a turf which was too spongy in the winter, but sand-peat-Hygromull at 60:20:20 gave good results. The sand and peat promoted good initial development of the turf and the rapid breakdown of Hygromull prevented sponginess. The limiting value for the moisture-holding capacity of the surface layer of sand in sports turf was 20% by weight. This value could be increased by the addition of perlite or vermiculite or by substituting pumice or lava for sand. |
