Abstract/Contents:Athletic field managers of cool season turfgrasses seem to have one major problem, their cutting heights are too low. Research was conducted to prove athletic coaches were wrong about cutting height compared to a athlete's speed. "No significant difference in time could be attributed to either the height of the stand or the variety of grass contained on the track. Certainly this data make it abundantly clear that cool season turfgrasses could be cut at higher levels without impeding on the speed of the athletes. The turfgrass should be held between 1 1/2 to 2 inches and kept moderately moist." The article cites pros and cons of clipping practices.
