Abstract/Contents:Reviews the major problems for the establishment and management of turfgrass in Japan. The most important requirement for good maintenance turf is preparation of soil with good drainage properties. The important role of topsoil sand is to maintain water infiltration and aeration by use of rather coarse sand with a narrow range of granular sizes. It is necessary to select a soil conditioner which has the ability to improve drainage, and the use of conditioners which impair drainage must be minimized. In this respect, inorganic soil conditioners are preferable to organic conditioners such as compost. Top dressing with sand has recently become more popular because cool season turf is being used more often than zoysiagrass. Selection of turfgrass species and cultivars is another important factor. It has been popular to use bentgrass and fine texture Zoysia grass for greens, medium texture Zoysia grass for tee areas and fairways, and coarse texture Zoysia grass for roughs. Recently, however, 80% of newly constructed golf courses have greens using just bentgrass. Creeping bentgrass has been widely used on greens. In particlular, penncross is becoming popular even in warm regions where bentgrass cannot be used from reason of the disadvantage of retarded growth in high temperatures on the summer season. There is a trend to use cool season turf on fairways, meeting the demand of players to play on evergreen grass. Tall-fescue or Kentucky bluegrass may be recommended as major cultivars suitable for this purpose. Soil topdressing and renovation are other important factors. Soil topdressing and coring are, in principle, topdressing prepared using the same materials as the bed layer. However, if the bed layer has poor physical characteristics, the soil for top-dressing must be prepared using sand as the major component as well as a soil conditioner. There are several important renovation procedures for maintaining an adequate root zone environment, such as aeration and birch-cutting. The proper use of agricultural chemical is a key factor. Efficient application of the appropriate agricultural chemicals depends a great deal on decreasing the frequency and volume of application and, as a matter of course, saving labor and prevention of environmental pollution. When applying agricultural chemicals on golf courses it is necessary to take the following matters into consideration. Spraying should be planned so that it does not interfere with the playing of golfer, rainfall should be anticipated, and the soil moisture, properties of chemicals to be used, and the characteristics of insects, diseases and weeds to be controlled should by [be] looked into.
