Abstract/Contents:"Reel versus rotary mowers; each has it advantages and disadvantages and must be matched to the conditions. Considerations for choosing a mower include: the size of area to be mowed; the number and location of obstructions; the types of turfgrasses used; the desired mowing frequency; the frequency and intensity of play and use; equipment maintenance capability; and the cost and technical sophistication of available labor. The two main differences between rotary and reel mowers are the way they cut grass and the height of the cut. Rotary mowers cut grass by slicing it horizontally, necessitating sharp blades for a clean cut. Rotary mowers are able to cut tall grass better than reel mowers, but are not as effective as reels at low cutting heights. The reel mower cuts grass by gathering it together against the bedknife with the cutting reel and scissoring it. This produces a much cleaner cut and allows it to be cut shorter." The rotary mower can be used in a variety of situations, to mow a wide path, and to reduce cutting time and fuel costs. The reel mower blades are more susceptible to damage from rocks and debris, do not perform well in tall grass, and bedknives must be kept sharp and reels properly aligned.
