Abstract/Contents:"Chemical properties of the soil not only directly influence the turfgrass stand, but also indirectly influence other soil parameters such as nutrient and pesticide leaching, disease activity, and availability of native and applied nutrients. The following discussion is an overview of important chemical reactions influencing soil nutrient levels and their interactions with respect to turf growth and management." Topics are: cation exchange (soil type, soil pH, anions), soil acidity and liming (origin of acidity, measuring soil acidity, liming materials [calcium and calcium-magnesium carbonates, calcium oxide and/or magnesium oxide, calcium hydroxide, marl, and slags], fineness of liming materials, and rates), soil alkalinity (reducing soil pH, established turf, acid-injection, and benefits of sulfur).
