| Abstract/Contents: | "Winter grass (Poa annua L.) is a major problem in couch (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) turf in Australia. The control of winter grass in couch turf involves the use of the pre-emergence herbicides, chlorpropham, trifluralin and simazine, and more recently, post-emergence treatments of endothal. Under Australian conditions, these chemicals have shown certain disadvantages. The new herbicide pronamide (N-(1,1-dimethyl-propynyl)-3,5-dichlorobenzamide) gave effective control of established winter grass plants at the dosage rates of 0.56 and 1.12 kg/ha and showed pre-emergence activity. One treatment was sufficient to provide effective control for a period of four to six months. The amount of water, either as rain or irrigation, influences the activity of pronamide against winter grass. Couch grass was tolerant to the rate of pronamide tested." |
