Abstract/Contents:"Fungicides initially were applied on 28 Apr prior to S. homoeocarpa becoming active in early May. The study area ranged 6.8 to 14.2% plot area injured by dollar spot the previous fall. Fungicides were applied with a CO2 pressurized (36 psi) sprayer calibrated to deliver 2.5 gal water per 1000 ft2 on either a 14 or 21 day spray schedule. Fungicides were applied 28 Apr, 20 May and 3 Jun on the 14-day schedule; on the 21-day schedule, fungicides were applied 28 Apr and 20 May. Fluazinam was only applied once on 20 May. Soil was a man-mixed sand with a pH of 6.5 and 4.4% OM. Plots were 5 by 5 ft, and were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. Percent of plot area blighted was assessed visually on a linear 0 to 100% scale where 0 = entire plot area green and healthy, and 100 = entire plot area blighted. Treatments with blight ratings exceeding 0.5% of plot area blighted would be considered unacceptable control on a putting green. Overall turf quality was determined visually on a 0 to 10 scale where 0 = brown or dead turf, and 10 = optimum greenness and density. Disease pressure was moderately severe. Blight ratings dropped mostly between 28 Apr and 20 May in plots treated with RH-07592, Sentinel and ASC 66518. During this period, dollar spot became active as shown by an increase in plot area blighted in untreated plots. Disease pressure subsided greatly by 3 Jun and all fungicide treatments were providing acceptable to marginally acceptable (0.5 to 0.7% area blighted) control. Environmental conditions soon became conducive to S. homoeocarpa activity, and by 12 Jun data showed that the residual effectiveness of only RH-0611 had broken down. Overall turf quality data not only reflect dollar spot control in spring, but also recovery of turf damaged by the disease the previous fall. On 12 Jun, highest quality ratings were observed in plots treated with fluazinam (only one application), ASC 66518 and Daconil 2787. Quality data for the aforementioned treatments did not vary significantly from plots treated with RH-07592, Eagle, Bayleton or Sentinel. Sentinel elicited a purple-blue foliar color in the creeping bentgrass, which may be considered objectionable by some people."
