Abstract/Contents:"From June to August, twenty-two chemical treatments were evaluated on a 15-year-old sward of creeping bentgrass at the Cambridge Research Station, University of Guelph. The fungicides tested included: Daconil 2787F, Rovral Green, and Tersan 1991 WP50, which are registered and recommended for use to control dollar spot disease of turfgrass in Ontario. Nineteen other treatments were also tested. Inocula of five isolates were grown on autoclaved chicken scratch, dried, chopped and applied at the rate of 1 g/m2 on 2 July. Fungicides were applied to 1 m x 2 m plots with a wheel-mounted compressed air boom sprayer at 140 kPa. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replications. First applications of fungicides were made on 30 June, and final applications on 26 August, with schedules following the recommended intervals. Weekly disease ratings, consisting of total counts of spots, were made between 30 June and 9 September. The following treatments (per 100 m2) gave excellent control of dollar spot disease: Tersan 1991 - 30 gm, ASC67098 - 90 mL, ASC6710 3 - 36 mL plus Daconil 2787 - 175 mL, and Banner 130EC - 31 mL or 58 mL at 14 days, and 58 mL at 21 days. These treatments showed good control during the application periods, but occasionally did not provide adequate control: Proturf Systemic - 1326 g alternating weekly with Fungicide X - 3521 g, Daconil 2787 - 190 mL, and Daconil 825 - 27 gm. These treatments had a fluctuating pattern of efficacy, indicating that spray intervals were too long: Rovral Green - 60 mL at 14 days, Fluazinam - 30 mL at 28 days, Fluazinam - 15 mL plus Daconil 825 - 50 gm at 21 days, Banner 130EC - 31 mL at 21 days and 58 mL at 28 days, and Myclobutanil 40% - 30 g at 21 days. The following showed inadequate control of dollar spot disease: Daconil 825 - 95 gm at 21 days, Proturf Systemic - 663 g with Fungicide X - 2347 g, Fore 80% - 250 g at 7 days, and Myclobutanil 40% - 15 g at 21 days. No phytotoxicity was observed. This field season was exceptionally wet and cool, and formulations that were expected to perform very well failed, apparently because disease pressure was intense and conditions were highly favourable for disease."
