| Abstract/Contents: | "A low-input-turf seeds mixture is being developed at the Swiss College of Agriculture, Zollikofen (Bern) to be used in urban areas. The objective was to produce grassland that requires little management (i.e. infrequent cutting, no applications of either fertilizers, no irrigation and open to the public at any time), that remains species-rich, and produces colourful flowers. The resulting seeds mixtures is based on the composition of pastures that has been heavily grazed by horses for several centuries, and has received no fertilizers or pesticides. The mixture contains 93% grass species, 5% herb species and 2% legume species. Where possible, it uses ecotypes from heavily-grazed old pastures. Low-input-turfs based on the mixture have been studied for two years, and have generally good results. In particular, plants derived form [from] the ecotypes have maintained their low-growing habit. The studies are continuing to determine the long-terme [term] performance and stability of grassland derived from the seeds mixture." |
