Abstract/Contents:"Indigenous plants are gradually attracting increasingly more attention for application in urban landscaping, because of their strong adaptability, low susceptibility to diseases and damage by insect pests, and low maintenance cost. In this study, Alysicarpus vaginalis, Zornia gibbosa, and Oxalis corniculate-three indigenous plants in Shenzhen area-were chosen, and their height, leaf width, leaf density, leaf shape uniformity, leaf color, greenness duration, coverage, growth rate and resistance were estimated. The results were analyzed using the "application landscape-performance-fitness" comprehensive evaluation index system to evaluate the turf value of the three plants. The results show that A. vaginalis can be used as recreational turf and soil conservation turf because of its resistance to intense trampling, high strength, and fast growth. Z. gibbosa is similar to the former and suited for planting as recreational turf. O. corniculata was found to have characteristics of high density and uniform growth. Therefore, it can be used as ornamental turf. The turf value comprehensive score of A. vaginalis (14.55) was the highest among the three plants, with the values for Z. gibbosa and O. corniculata being 13.85 and 12.65, respectively. All the three plants have a good prospect for turf application and provide new choices of turf-grass for afforestation work in Shenzhen City and even in southern China."
