Abstract/Contents:"Moody Hill Farms - a manufacturer of quality composts from manure, yard waste and other carbonaceous materials - has successfully completed a two year experiment on the practicality of compost as a replacement from some of the peat used in container grown plants." According to Nel Johnson, "Our project determined that compost can replace from 50 percent to 75 percent of the peat in potting soil mixes and about 30 percent of it in germination mixes." Eleven compost recipes were developed as possible replacements for peat. Experiments were performed on three of the eleven based on their similarity to peat in physical properties and for their low salt levels. Materials which comprised the three compost were yard waste, horse manure bedding, cow manure, aged compost, and straw. Tests were also done on mixes of about half and half compost and peat moss. The potting mixes with yard waste compost performed as well and sometimes better than conventional mixes. Their present goal is to continue experimenting in hopes of developing a compost with even greater peat moss replacement potential.
