Abstract/Contents: | Covering turf with plastic sheeting for either 2- or 6-day periods weekly during the winter raised the minimum temperature over the turf in late autumn and early winter, and from the beginning of February the maximum temperature increased. Grass growth in late autumn was stimulated by covering, particularly for the longer periods, and its color changed from a bright mid-green to ligh green. Turf in which Lolium perenne predominated was susceptible to diseases when covered, and during periods of heavy frost its appearance deteriorated and the sod became loose in texture. However, from February onwards covering improved the appearance of the turf, and greening-up (sod regeneration) occurred earlier than on uncovered plots. |
