Abstract/Contents:"Use of plant growth regulators (PGRs) is a practice that is widely utilized by turfgrass managers for a variety of maintenance reasons, but more recently has been used for improving turfgrass stress tolerance. Proline and γ - Aminobutyric acid (GABA) are amino acids that accumulate in a variety of plant species during drought, but physiological and metabolic mechanisms for proline and GABA effects on drought tolerance are largely unknown for turfgrass species. The main objective of this study was to determine how each metabolite individually or in combination affect drought survival and post-drought recovery in creeping bentgrass and the regulatory mechanisms involved. The study found that proline and GABA alone and in combination maintained higher turf quality and photochemical efficiency throughout drought stress compared to an untreated control, and during post-drought recovery the proline treatment recovered most rapidly compared to the other treatments. Plants treated with either proline or GABA exhibited the same level of leaf water deficit and shoot growth as the untreated control plants exposed to drought stress. The maintenance of greater turf quality and physiological activities of plants with proline or GABA without alternating water relations and growth suggest that the two metabolites may improve drought tolerance for creeping bentgrass mainly by enhancing stress protective defense mechanisms, including against oxidative damage induced by drought."
