Abstract/Contents:"Fairways and roughs represent the largest acreage of irrigated golf course turf. While creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera: CB), is the preferred cool-season fairway species, other species also tolerate fairway mowing heights (e.g. 12 mm), but their water requirements are not well documented. A two-year field study evaluated the total water needs of five species: creeping bentgrass, colonial bentgrass (Agrostis capillaris: CLB), perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne: PR), three Kentucky bluegrasses (Poa pratensis: KBG), two fineleaf fescues (Festuca spp.:FF), and two tall fescues (Schedonorus arundinaceus: TF) maintained at two supplemental irrigation regimes on a silt-loam soil under a fixed roof rain-out shelter in West Lafayette, IN. The supplemental irrigation regimes were: 80% evapotranspiration (ET) replacement, applied three times per week and a green color threshold response approach using digital image techniques. When an individual plot passed the green color threshold, 55 and 65% green for year one and two, respectively, 0.76 cm water was applied. In year 1, for the 75-day study period, the 80% ET replacement received a total of 27.6 cm of supplemental irrigation. By contrast, the color response-based regime required substantially less water for all turf species, with TF requiring the least (6.03 cm) and CB the most (11.30 cm). When compared to the to the 80% ET replacement regime, the color response threshold approach resulted in 78 and 60% less water applied to TF and CB, respectively. In year 2 through 40 days of evaluation, similar species trends continued for the color response threshold regime, TF required the least (4.75 cm) and CB the most (10.6 cm). Additional data like surface firmness and divot recovery were also recorded. This study demonstrates that significant fairway water savings can be achieved by maintaining species other than CB, and employing alternative supplemental irrigation programs like a green color threshold response approach."
