Abstract/Contents:"Topdressing sand typically is applied at very low rates (dusting) to avoid interference in playability and excessive dulling of cutting edges. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of (1) eliminating coarse particles from topdressing sand (subsequently increasing the quantities of medium, fine and very fine particles) and (2) core cultivation (plus backfilling holes with medium-coarse sand) on the physical properties of the mat layer of a creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) turf. This trial used a 3 x 2 x 2 factorially arranged randomized complete block design with four replications. Treatments were initiated in May 2016 on a 20-month-old Shark creeping bentgrass turf mowed at 2.8-mm. The factors included sand size (medium-coarse, medium-fine, fine-medium), rate of topdressing (2,441 or 4,882 kg per hectare every 2 weeks), and cultivation (cored plus backfill or non-cored). Non-topdressed controls at both levels of cultivation were included for orthogonal contrasts. Clippings were sampled three times per year the day after topdressing to determine the weight and size distribution of sand picked-up by mowing. Undisturbed core samples were collected in May 2016, 2017 and 2018 to characterize mat layer depth, organic matter (OM) concentration and sand size distribution. Topdressing increased the depth of the mat layer and decreased the OM concentration compared to non-topdressed controls by May 2017. Core cultivation and backfilling with medium-coarse sand reduced OM concentration of the mat layer compared to non-cored plots but did not influence depth. Sand size distribution within the mat layer was influenced by the sand size, and this effect was dependent on the rate of topdressing and cultivation. Fine-medium and medium-fine sand topdressing increased the fineness of sand within the mat layer while cultivation offset this effect. Responses from the May 2018 sampling will be discussed."
