Abstract/Contents:"Successful perennial ryegrass varieties must meet the demands of both seed producers and turfgrass managers. Turfgrass breeders routinely screen for a suite of turf quality traits, however this matters little if the variety is not economically viable from a production standpoint. This project builds upon past research in selection technique, environment, and experimental design to determine both optimal traits and plant configurations for selection in a typical breeding program. We tested the response of over 40 turfgrass and seed production traits in four different selection environments, including: managed turfgrass; seed production sward; and both standard (0.35 m2 plant-1) and competitive (0.05 m2 plant-1) spaced plantings. The experiment spanned two Minnesota locations over two years and included 15 related experimental populations and five check varieties. Results of response variables across the different configurations, ranging from image analysis and yield component traits, will be discussed."
