Abstract/Contents:"As previous evidence has shown, when nutrients are applied according to the best management practices (BMPs) for Florida golf courses on healthy turfgrass, nutrients have a limited opportunity to contribute to environmental risk. Some of the commonly used preemergence herbicides have a considerable potential to inhibit root development. This detrimental condition may increase nutrient leaching and decrease nutrient uptake even on healthy turfgrass. Therefore, the objective of this research is to determine the effects of preemergence herbicides on phosphorous leaching on Tifway 419 hybrid bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy]. Five treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications and included a no-turf control, a no-herbicide control, oxadiazon (224 kg ha-1), prodiamine (1.17 L ha-1), and indaziflam (0.33 L ha-1). Bermudagrass sprigs were planted on February 23rd on a mixture of 90% sand and 10% peat and the experiment started on June 9th of 2017. Fertilizer [15-02-12 (N-P-K)] was applied at 49 kg ha-1 60 d-1 to all turf plots, according to BMP recommendations, as well as micronutrients and other pesticides required for normal turf maintenance. When necessary, leachate was collected and analyzed for orthophosphate-P concentration. Turf Quality (1 to 9 scale; 1 = dead/brown turf, 6 = minimum acceptable turf and 9 = optimum turf) was evaluated every fifteen days. Roots were collected 4 and 8 weeks after treatment (WAT) (0-5 cm and 5-15 cm) and analyzed for length density and herbicide injury (1 to 6 scale; 1 means no symptom and 6 means most tissue is necrotic). Ortho-P leaching from turf plots was equivalent to the negative control on each collection date indicating that a properly maintained turf limits the loss of nutrients to the environment."
