Abstract/Contents:"Path rush (Juncus tenuis) is a turfgrass weed found throughout the southeastern United States. Weakened areas of managed turf are favored by path rush. A greenhouse study, designed as a 3x3 factorial arrangement of treatments, was conducted at Mississippi State University in summer 2018 to determine the effects of soil compaction and moisture on path rush establishment. The study was repeated twice, and included 4 replications. Native soil was compacted in pots to three bulk densities. Three path rush plants, harvested from an 'Emerald' zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica × Z. tenuifolia) sod field were transplanted into each pot. These bulk densities were 1586 (±11 SD), 1728 (±17 SD), and 1998 (±26 SD) kg m-3 for non-compacted, medium compaction, and high compaction, respectively. Moisture levels were achieved by watering daily, every other day, or weekly and were quantified by measuring the percent volumetric water content (%VWC). Final VWC for daily, every other day, and daily were 9 (±2 SD), 16 (±3 SD), and 58 (±7 SD)%, respectively. Plants were harvested 10 weeks after establishment, and dry root and shoot weights were recorded for each pot after drying for 48 hours. Data were pooled across runs and analyzed using linear regression within GraphPad Prism 7. In pots watered daily, dry root mass increased 0.003 g pot-1 for each kg m-3 increase in bulk density. Similarly, an increase of .001 g pot-1 for every kg m-3 increase in bulk density was observed for dry shoot mass. Across all moisture levels, roots and shoots harvested from highly compacted pots increased 0.05 g and 0.03 g pot-1, respectively, for every 1% increase in VWC. Roots harvested from non-compacted pots across all moisture levels increased by 0.11 g pot-1 for every 1% increase in VWC. Future research should evaluate the effects of aeration on path rush establishment."
