Abstract/Contents:"Wetting agents are commonly applied by turfgrass managers to manage localized dry spot (LDS) occurrence. Preventative applications are often made regularly, on fixed intervals, throughout the growing season as directed by product labels. This approach, however, may not provide the most efficient use of wetting agents since LDS development is most common in mid-summer dry periods. Additionally, wetting agents are susceptible to microbial breakdown, which is influenced by soil temperature. The objective of this research was to assess the ability of wetting agents to reduce soil water repellency at different soil temperatures. Five wetting agent treatments were applied on a creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) sand-based research green in St. Paul, MN in May, July, and October 2017 on separate plots. Soil temperature was logged in each plot and soil water repellency was determined using water droplet penetration time tests. After a single application, wetting agent treatments varied in their abilities to reduce soil water repellency compared to an untreated control for the remainder of the growing season. A growth chamber experiment was added to reduce fluctuations of soil temperature and to overcome spatial variability of field trials. The rootzones of creeping bentgrass plugs were maintained in conetainers at three temperature treatments (16, 24, and 32 C). Following single wetting agent applications, soil water repellency and water retention were quantified over time. Results from these experiments will be used for wetting agent application frequency recommendations."
