Abstract/Contents:"With recent climate changes and water deficiency gradually increasing in the United States, soil hydrophobicity remains a persistent problem for golf course superintendents. The development of soil hydrophobicity on USGA sand-based greens leads to water repellency and ultimately localized dry spot (LDS), resulting in plant death. To prevent and alleviate LSD, many golf course superintendents apply wetting agents, amphiphilic molecules that contain both a hydrophobic tail and hydrophilic head. The hydrophobic tail adheres to the hydrophobic sand grain, allowing water molecules to attach to the hydrophilic head and thus promote wetting. However, many questions remain unanswered regarding the use of wetting agents. One particular question is about the selection of proper wetting agents that maintain a balance between adequate water retention and a firm playing surface. To help to determine this answer, two field experiments were established on an A4 and 007 creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) putting green built based on USGA recommendations in Columbia, MO. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications, and individual plot was measured 1.5 meter by 1.5 meter. Six different wetting agents that represent different physical properties such as surface tension were applied on monthly basis. Treatment effects were assessed from May to October by measuring water infiltration rate, volumetric water content, turf quality, LDS percentage and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). This experiment is still ongoing and more data will be discussed in the presentation."
