Abstract/Contents:"As the co-factor of urease in hydrolysis of urea in both soils and inside plants, nickel (Ni) functions, toxicities and others for turfgrasses still remain unclear. However, with popular uses of urea as a major nitrogen source, nickel deserves more attention particularly with sand based soils with almost zero (0-2 mg kg-1) Ni in the soil as well as warm-season turfgrasses. Research findings also show that at Ni concentrations of 0.8 mg kg-1 or higher, cool-season turfgrasses demonstrated toxicity symptoms while two warm-season turfgrasses showed Ni toxicity starting at 40 mg kg-1 with 50 folds of tolerance differences. What are the strategies in use of Ni as a micronutrient for fine turf? It can summarized into two major factors to consider and practice: 1) to have thorough soil tests regularly to monitor soil Ni concentrations; 2) to apply Ni as a micronutrient regularly either foliar or root applied fertilizer to turfgrasses particularly with warm-season turfgrasses with urea as the major N sources. The interactions of Ni with other nutrients and metal micronutrient of Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn require future researches as well as their specific enzymatic activities."
