Abstract/Contents:"In the transition zone bermudagrass is commonly overseeded with ryegrass in the fall to provide an actively growing turf surface for fall and spring athletic events. A popular method of ryegrass transitioning in the spring is by chemical control, due to its effectiveness. Fraze mowing has been identified as a mechanical tool that could aid in ryegrass transitioning of bermudagrass. Studies were designed to determine the effectiveness of mechanical removal of perennial ryegrass overseeding to chemical techniques on common 'Riveria' bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. Var. dactylon].These studies were conducted at the University of Tennessee Center for Athletic Field Safety (Knoxville, TN) and the Oklahoma State University Turfgrass Research Center (Stillwater, OK). Fraze mowing treatments were applied in May of 2017, with ryegrass transition and bermudagrass recovery tracked for six weeks. Grid counts and digital image analysis was used to determine ryegrass transition. Seven treatments were utilized in this study and they included: three fraze mowing depths (6 mm, 13 in, and 19 mm), two chemical applications (Monument and Revolver), a scalping treatment (19 mm), and an untreated control. Fraze mowing at 13 mm and both chemical treatments were identified as the best methods for ryegrass transition in this study. Fraze mowing at the 13 mm depth was found to be as effective as chemical transition. While fraze mowing greater than 13 mm can removed excessive amounts of material and delayed spring green up."
