Abstract/Contents: | "Virtually every member of the American Society of Agronomy joined this professional society for collaboration, support and to further their passion for the sciences which allow us to efficiently and sustainably produce crops, forages and turf grass. This encompasses a broad array of scientific processes, which when integrated with other disciplines has resulted in the unprecedented growth in productivity in agriculture. If things go right in the academic end of the spectrum, we are immersed in scientific discovery, writing, education; whether it be students or Extension clientele, grant writing, and a variety of activities to support the college, agency or department. As we approach the end of our career, it is very difficult to let go of things we love and move on to new pursuits. For some, this involves a detailed planning process; for others it just happens. For faculty, researchers and Extension, there appears to no consistent process to plan for a retirement while keeping an involvement in the science and the society which represents it. There are several approaches including part-time appointments, emeritus positions and self-funded positions, many of which are a close variant of the pre-retirement position. Others struggle with how to remain in touch with their profession and their passion while enjoying a retirement. This paper will address how we might plan a more rewarding retirement while keeping a hand in the profession." |
