Abstract/Contents: | In experiments on warm-water soil heating of turf in playing fields a temperature of 5 deg.C in pipes at a depth of 3 cm was sufficient to keep football pitches frost free, but higher temperatures were required to melt snow. There was no lasting damage to the turf even when the temperature was increased to 15 deg. In frosty periods prior to the day of play, provided the turf consisted of species such as Poa pratensis which do not grow actively in winter. On the other hand, Phleum nodosum, Cynosurus cristatus and other species whose growth is stimulated in mild winter periods may be damaged by even slight temperature increases. Covering the heated turf with a plastic film gave further frost protection, reduced evaporation and lowered the energy input required. However, it also deprived the turf of light and could lead to excessive rises in temperature which stimulated growth. |
