Abstract/Contents:Pre-em. herbicides were evaluated for the control of Digitaria sp. in established Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis). Pre-San (bensulide e.c.) and Betasan (bensulide granular formulation) both at 15 lb/acre applied in April gave 100% and 96% control of Digitaria sp., respectively, with no apparent injury to the turfgrass. However, in toxicity trials on autumn-sown Kentucky bluegrass, Pre-San applied in May caused 18% injury 1 month later. DAacthal (chlorthaldimethyl) w.p. at 15 lb/acre gave 99% control of Digitaria and did not injure autumn-sown bluegrass. Ronstar (oxadiazon) at 4 lb/acre and Tolban (profluralin) at 3 lb/acre both granular formulations also gave good Digitaria control but slightly injured newly-sown turf. In general, e.c. was more effective than other formulations for the control of Digitaria but was also more toxic to newly-sown turfgrass.
