Abstract/Contents:Seed of 8 cvs of Lolium perenne, Festuca rubra, Poa pratensis (2), Agrostis palustris, A. tneuis, F. arundinacea and P. trivialis were sown in boxes and held in growth chambers at day/night regimes of 90/80, 75/65 and 60/50 deg.F, with a 14-hour photoperiod. L. perenne cv. Pelo germinated most rapidly and P. pratensis cv. Merion slowest, regardless of temperature. The optimum for Pelo, Merion, F. rubra cv. Pennlawn and P. pratensis cv. Park was 75/65 deg., whereas for F. arundinacea cv. Kentucky-31 the other 2 regimes were better. No regime had any measurable influence on the germination rate of either Agrostis cv. Seedling growth rates of all cvs were greatest at 75/65 deg. during the early stages of establishment, but thereafter differences between treatment responses diminished. L. perenne seedlings grew most quickly and those of P. pratensis and Agrostis spp. least quickly at all temperatures.
