Abstract/Contents:A study was conducted to select water-soluble corn gluten meal related materials and to isolate and identify the active compound(s) responsible for the root inhibitory activity on weed plants. "Five root-inhibitory compounds were isolated from the water soluble extract protein from corn gluten meal and their structures were identified. Synthetically produced samples of these five compounds were bioassayed and their inhibitory effects on the roots of the test plant were demonstrated. Two U.S. patent applications based on this work have been filed with the Patent Office."
