Abstract/Contents:"One hundred twenty-three cultivars and selections from the 1990 National Perennial Ryegrass Test were established in Sep, 1990 at the Joseph Valentine Turfgrass Research Center in University Park, PA. The plots were 4 x 6 ft and seeded at a rate of 5.5 lb per 1000 sq ft. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The turf was mowed at 1/2 in., fertilized with 1 lb N per 1000 sq ft on 4 May, and 0.9 lb N per 1000 sq ft on 29 Jun. Ethofumesate (1.5 lb per A) was applied on 15 May to control annual bluegrass, and 1.5 lb per A of pendimethalin was applied on 18 May to control crabgrass. No fungicides or insecticides were used during 1992. The site was irrigated only when necessary to prevent wilt. A uniform infestation of dollar spot disease occurred in late Jun, and a uniform infestation of red thread in early Jun. The plots were rated visually for percent disease injury on 3 Jul for dollar spot and Jun 7 for red thread. All data was subjected to analysis of variance and Fisher's protected least significant difference (LSD) test was used to compare treatment means. Significant differences were found in the resistance of perennial ryegrass to dollar spot disease, with most cultivars and selections showing good resistance. The cultivars or selections that were most severely injured by dollar spot included 'Goalie', 'CLP 144', 'Danilo', and 'Essence'. Differences in perennial ryegrass resistance to red thread disease were detected, with 'Regal' showing the least amount of injury and 'PR 9108' and 'OFI-D4' the most severely infected."
