Abstract/Contents:"Twenty cultivars of four species of bentgrass (Agrostis spp.) were established in Maury silt loam on 21 Sep 89 at the UK Spindletop Research Farm as part of the National Bentgrass Fairways and Tees Evaluation. Three replicated plots (8 X 12 ft) of each variety were arranged in a RCB design. Two fall applications of urea (4.0 lb nitrogen/A at each application) were made in 1990. Plots were maintained at a height of 0.5 inches and irrigated during the evaluation. The ability of each variety to recover from dollar spot (DS) and brown patch (BP) was evaluated by comparing mean disease levels on 1 Aug to those of 11 Aug and by evaluating turf quality ratings on 5 Aug and 14 Aug. Each plot was divided into two 6 X 8 ft subplots. In each replicate, one subplot of each variety was treated with cyproconazole (0.25 oz ai/1000 ft2) on 2 Aug. On 1 Aug disease levels were measured in three randomly selected on square foot quadrats in each subplot. In each quadrat the number of DS infection centers were counted, and the percentage of remaining turf with BP was estimated. The disease levels in the three quadrats were averaged to obtains an estimate of the mean disease level in each subplot. Disease levels in each subplot were determined again on 11 Aug. Disease levels in treated and untreated subplots (11 Aug, mean of 3 replicates) were compared to each other and to the pretreatment disease level of the plot (1 Aug, mean of 6 replicates). Turf quality ratings were taken on 5 Aug and 14 Aug for each variety. Treated subplots were compared to untreated subplots using the following scale: 1 = no difference, 2 = slight improvement (improved color and less apparent disease) and 3 = clear distinct improvement. All statistical analyses were made using analysis of variance (GLM, SAS) and Waller-Duncan K-ratio mean separation test at P = 0.05. Pretreatment (1 Aug) disease levels (mean of six replicated subplots) ranged from 2.4 (Bardot) to 22.2 (Carmen) for DS, and from 9.7% (National) to 40.8% (Allure) for BP. Some varieties recovered (reduced disease levels, P = 0.05) only in treated subplots. Other varieties recovered equally well in both treated and untreated subplots. Some varieties recovered significantly without treatment, but exhibited even greater recovery with treatment. Significant recovery from DS occurred in eight varieties without treatment; four of these recovered even more with treatment. In untreated subplots BP disease levels significantly increased in three varieties (National, Procup, and SR 1020) and decreased in two (Bardot and Allure). Improved turf quality on 5 Aug was exhibited by nine varieties; of these the variety SR 1020 was superior in visual appearance (P = 0.05). SR 1020 may have exhibited distinct recovery earlier than other varieties due to the increase in BP in the untreated subplot. Only one variety (Egmont) did not exhibit improved turf quality on 14 Aug. These results indicate the possible existence of variation in the ability of bentgrasses to recover from DS and BP, with either changes in environmental conditions or with fungicidal treatment."
