Abstract/Contents:"Field plots, 1.4 by 1.5 m, were seeded 20 Jun 86 on coarse sand at the Jacklin research center in Post Falls in a randomized block design with 3 replicates. The area was irrigated daily during the growing season with and automatic irrigation system; water was applied to minimize moisture stress. The area was mowed twice weekly at 32 mm and fertilized with sulfur-coated urea at about 30 g N/m2 yr. Symptoms of necrotic ring spot (NRS) bagan appearing in 1989. No inoculum was used. Plots were rated for disease severity on 8 Oct 89, 16 Sept 91, and 9 Oct 91. Ring size, intensity, and number of spots per plot were considered in the severity rating. Data were sorted first by NRS resistance and secondarily by 5-year turf quality results (data not presented) before listing in the table below. Necrotic ring spot symptoms developed comparatively soon after establishment on this seeded area and by 5 years after planting, certain plots had severe disease. Some varieties, such as Glade, showed no symptoms of disease over the evaluation period. Opal and Annika were the most susceptible cultivars in the study. Many varieties of Scandinavian origin showed moderate to high levels of susceptibility, although there were exceptions. Perhaps NRS is uncommon in Scandinavia and susceptible ecotypes have not been removed by natural selection."
