Abstract/Contents:"Research was performed to evaluate consecutive yearly applications of several plant growth regulators (PGR's) for bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge.) seedhead suppression. Treatments included glyphosate, fluazifop-butyl, sethoxydim, ethofumesate, quinclorac, sulfometuron methyl, maleic hydrazide, trinexapac-ethyl and an imazaquin + imazethapyr mixture. Data collected included seedhead counts (number/m2) bahiagrass density (%), plant height (cm) and phytotoxicity (1 to 10 with 5 being the minimum acceptable level). The imazaquin + imazethapyr mixture reduced seedhead production to 0/m2 for approximately 8 weeks after treatment (WAT) but control was lost by 12 WAT. Glyphosate, fluazifop butyl, sethoxydim, sulfometuron methyl and maleic hydrazide maintained good control (< or = 1.0 seedheads/m2) of bahiagrass seedhead production for 8 WAT, but control slipped by 12 WAT. Quinclorac, ethofumesate and trinexapac-ethyl did not adequately control seedhead production when compared to the untreated. All chemicals had density ratings > or = 64% at 8 WAT and > or = 73% at 12 WAT. Ethofumesate treatment resulted in the greatest density with 81% at 12 WAT. At 8 WAT, all chemicals held bahiagrass height to < or = 32 cm with glyphosate exhibiting the shortest height (18 cm). By 12 WAT, glyphosate reported a height of 26 cm compared to 34 cm for the untreated. The heights of the bahiagrass treated with the remaining chemicals was < or = 37 cm at 12 WAT compared to 34 cm for the untreated. All treated bahiagrass had greater density and lower heights than untreated. Least phytotoxicity ratings were from ethofumesate at 2, 3 and 5 WAT (8.5, 8.6 and 8.9, respectively). At 8 WAT, sulfometuron methyl had the least damage (phyto 8.8), while glyphosate had the lowest phytotoxicty rating 12 WAT with a rating of 8.1. No phyto rating at any time for any chemical was below the minimum acceptable 5.0. The suppression of seedhead production was best accomplished by the imazaquin + imazethapyr mixture. Glyphosate proved to be the second best chemical for bahiagrass seedhead control in this study."
