Abstract/Contents:"Leaf colour is a useful characteristic for the breeding and registration of herbage varieties, especially for amenity purposes. A method of measuring colour of single leaves of Lolium spp varieties grown from single spaced plant trials using a Minolta Chroma Meter is described. The methodology has advantages over assessment by visual score and a previous method using leaf strips. Examination of individual leaves showed that there is variation along their length, indicating that measurements must be standardised for position on each leaf. Older leaves were senescent and diseased, so only young, healthy and fully expanded leaves should be sampled. Good agreement between visual and measured colour assessment was found, though it was not possible to describe all differences between plants using a single characteristic. Comparison of UPOV example varieties nominated in UPOV guidelines with measured colour data showed good agreement in the lightness parameter but there was difficulty in relating observed differences to other measured parameters. A number of variety pairs in registration trials which could not be separated using standard characters were differentiated using measured colour characters. Since it is quantitative, colour measurement can also be used to establish variety uniformity. As it is impractical to assess single spaced plants visually, the use of this simple, rapid and objective method of leaf colour measurement is highly desirable both to distinguish differences between varieties and to determine the uniformity of plants within a variety."
